It takes a lot to start a business and even more to keep it going. About a year ago, between September and December 2021, we attended the launches and openings of over 35 new establishments and spaces in the hospitality and entertainment industries. Throughout 2022, we have unfortunately seen a significant number of them take a step back for different reasons. However, here are our top 5 venues who have defied the odds and are killing it in the game in less than a year.
#1: KRUNA NIGHTCLUB

📅 Tuesday, Thursday - Sunday
⏰ 11PM - 6AM
Launched in November 2021, the Kruna Nightclub has become a staple of nightlife in Accra. They used strategic marketing towards the younger and more energetic crowd, lighting worthy of its own show, extremely friendly bouncers, top MC's and hosts, and some of the baddest DJs in the game to draw us in. Their open door policy appeals to patrons from near and far; and even occasional well-known celebrities like Sarkodie, King Promise, Kidi, Lazy and a sleuth of your others random nights. Kruna is at the top of this list because their strategy has worked so well that Accra-Fuor can now turn up non-stop from Tuesday to Sunday thanks to their very successful "On A Tuesday" event every Tuesday night from 11:59PM (by So African).
#2: FREEDOM SKATE PARK

📅 Monday - Sunday
⏰ 9AM - 7PM
Unlike the bars and clubs on this list, Freedom Skate Park is slightly different from the other establishments on our list of preferred new spots 2021-22. Freedom Skate Park is Ghana's first functional Skate Park. The skate park, by the Surf Ghana Collective, commemorates Virgil Abloh and was opened in mid-December 2021 as an alternative space for the youth to express themselves, learn to skate, and have interesting, captivating events. The bright Yellow colour visible at all areas of the space and the greenery emits positive energy. Even cowardly non-skaters like myself enjoy hanging out at the space because of the active ambiance. No wonder the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Vic Mensa and Chance the Rapper can be found in the vicinity whenever they visit the motherland.
#3: MOOD BAR

Since its opening in early December 2021, Mood Bar has steadily crawled its way into our hearts with its dark, cozy exterior yet colourfully lit interior and grammable decor. Mood Bar used creative event themes, unique cocktails, a diverse array of stellar DJ's and our favorite celebrity guest hosts to lure us into their space, and kept us there with the classy and chic setting. The patronage of Mood Bar consists of the best dressed young adults with enough change to spare on a good time.
#4: SILVERFOX X TUNNEL LOUNGE

🏫 Strip Club & Lounge
📅 Wednesday - Sunday
⏰ 11PM - 6AM
As Accra's only classy Strip Club, SilverFox is our fourth recognized establishment on our Top 5 New Spots 21-22 list. It comes in tandem with Tunnel Lounge as a package deal since both establishments share the same grounds. The High-End strip club opened in early December 2021 and immediately raised the bar for Gentlemen's Clubs in the city 10 fold. The clean, dark, ornate interior and high caliber of female entertainment, sets SilverFox worlds apart from other Gentlemen's clubs in the city. Now you don’t need to be "brave" to appreciate a live public show of the female natural form - however this quality comes with a price. The adjoining Tunnel Lounge is the Yin to the SilverFox Yang and offers patrons the opportunity to wind down with fantastic cocktails and great food in its equally classy outdoor setup.
#5: HERMANOS JUNGLE

Hermanos Jungle brings a new meaning to the term "Jungle Fever" and after going there a few times, you are likely to also catch this infectious, vibrant and uninhibited illness that only infects the lively and young at heart. Hermanos was opened in late November 2021, and is strategically located between 2 popular campuses. This appears to have factored this into their decor since their aesthetic appeals to a younger audience while maintaining a trendy air. Hermanos boasts of some of the best pool raves in Accra and puts a similar amount of effort is put into experimenting with other types of events like their speed dating and game nights.
Though it is unfortunate that some of our favorite hangouts could not withstand the test of time, these establishments serve as testaments of persistence, creativity and encouragement to young hopefuls and dreamers. The establishments may not be there forever, but they are there now so pass through and enjoy the unparalleled vibes they have to offer.
